Why Nantes?
Often overlooked in favour of Paris or Bordeaux, Nantes is one of France’s most creative and liveable cities. Sitting on the Loire River, once a powerful maritime port, today it blends bold contemporary art, medieval history, river culture and easy access to the Atlantic coast.
It’s compact, stylish and perfect for a relaxed, culture-rich weekend — especially by train.
Getting to Nantes by Train
Nantes is extremely well connected:
From Paris Montparnasse: TGV, approx. 2 hours
From Bordeaux: around 4 hours
From Lyon: approx. 4.5–5 hours
The station (Gare de Nantes) is just east of the historic centre. You can walk into town in 15 minutes or hop on the tram directly outside.
Book via SNCF Connect and reserve in advance for TGV savings.
Where to Stay
Best areas:
Bouffay (Old Town) – historic, lively, walkable
Île de Nantes – modern, creative, riverside
Graslin – elegant 18th-century architecture and restaurants
Day 1: History, Art & River Life
Château des Ducs de Bretagne
This white-stone fortress is the heart of Nantes. Inside, the museum tells the complex story of the city — from Brittany’s ducal capital to maritime trade powerhouse.
Walk the ramparts for views over the old town.
Cathédrale Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul
Recently restored after a major fire, this vast Gothic cathedral feels surprisingly serene. Don’t miss the tomb of François II, Duke of Brittany — a Renaissance masterpiece.
Lunch: La Cigale
An Art Nouveau brasserie opposite the theatre. Classic oysters, fish dishes and Loire wines. Book ahead.
Alternative: grab galettes (Breton buckwheat crêpes) in Bouffay.
Machines de l’Île
Built on former shipyards, this surreal artistic project is pure Nantes. The giant mechanical elephant that walks along the river is unforgettable.
Even if you don’t ride it, wander the creative district — galleries, bars, industrial heritage.
Evening: River Walk & Trentemoult
Take the Navibus ferry across the Loire to Trentemoult, a former fishing village of colourful houses. Sunset here is magic.
Dinner suggestion: riverside seafood with Muscadet wine.
Day 2: Gardens, Art & Hidden Corners
Jardin des Plantes
One of France’s finest botanical gardens. Beautifully curated, whimsical installations, perfect morning stroll.
Musée d’Arts de Nantes
Excellent fine art collection from 13th century to contemporary. Manageable and high quality.
Passage Pommeraye
A 19th-century covered arcade — elegant staircases and boutique shopping.
Hidden Gem: Mémorial de l’Abolition de l’Esclavage
A powerful riverside memorial acknowledging Nantes’ role in the slave trade. Quiet, thoughtful, and important.
