Naples in summer can be intense - sizzling heat and buzzing crowds in the city’s historic centre. But when the heat peaks or the pace becomes a little too much, you're just a short train ride away from breezy coastlines, archaeological wonders, and shaded palace gardens.

Whether you're staying in Naples for a few days or using it as a hub, here are 5 easy day trips you can take by train to explore more of Campania without the need for a car.

Why go: Less well-known than Vesuvius, the Phlegraean Fields offer steaming volcanic craters, ancient amphitheatres, and coastal views - with fewer tourists.

How to get there: Take the Cumana train from Montesanto station (35 min to Pozzuoli Solfatara)

What to do: Explore the Solfatara Crater and smell the sulphur vents. Visit the Amphitheatre of Pozzuoli, one of Italy’s best preserved. Enjoy fresh grilled fish at a waterfront trattoria

Extra tip: You can combine Pozzuoli with Baiae or Cumae if you leave early.

👑 3. Royal Palace of Caserta

Why go: It’s Italy’s answer to Versailles — with grand halls, sweeping gardens, and fountains that seem to stretch for miles.

How to get there: Regional train from Napoli Centrale (about 40 min). Palace entrance is directly opposite the station.

What to do:Tour the palace rooms and dramatic staircases. Rent a bike or hop on a shuttle to explore the expansive gardens. Bring a picnic or cool off in the shady English Garden

Bonus: Caserta town is also great for a short stroll and a local gelato.

🏛️ 4. Cumae & Baiae Archaeological Park

Why go:This area once held the villas of emperors and poets — now you can wander through ancient baths, mysterious caves, and even underwater ruins.

How to get there: Cumana train to Fusaro, then local bus or walk. Allow 1–1.5 hours from Naples

What to do: Descend into the Sibyl’s Cave at Cumae. Visit the Roman thermal baths at Baiae. Check out the underwater archaeological park ( you can go snorkeling!)

Pro tip: Wear comfortable shoes and bring water — much of the park is exposed.

🌊 5. Meta or Seiano (Sorrento Coast without the crowds)

Why go: Avoid the Amalfi Coast crowd and enjoy a local-style beach day with calm waters and stunning cliff views.

How to get there: Circumvesuviana train from Naples (about 1 hour). Get off at Meta or Seiano — both have beaches within walking distance

What to do: Rent a sunbed and umbrella at a lido. Take a dip in the clear waters, ideal for swimming. Enjoy a seafood lunch or sunset spritz before heading back
