Why Go
The GoldenPass Line offers one of Switzerland’s most graceful rail journeys. Rather than icy drama, it delivers vineyards, alpine meadows, chalets, waterfalls, and big skies — a gentle, storybook introduction to the Alps.
A Little Background
Developed in stages in the early 20th century, the line linked Lake Geneva with central Switzerland, opening mountain regions without extreme gradients. It remains one of the country’s most elegant routes.
What to Expect on the Train
Swiss trains are spotless and punctual. Panoramic coaches are available, but standard carriages offer excellent views.
Best seats: right-hand side leaving Montreux for lake views.
How to Do the Journey
Montreux → Zweisimmen → Interlaken
Smooth, well-timed connections
Easy extension into the Bernese Oberland
Best Time to Go
June–September: green meadows, waterfalls
Winter: snow-covered scenery, shorter days
Where to Stay
Montreux: lakeside or near the station for early departures
Interlaken: near Interlaken Ost for onward mountain trains
What to Eat
Fondue, raclette, alpine cheeses, pastries, and excellent Swiss chocolate — hearty food that matches the landscape.
Insiders Tip
Assuming panoramic cars are essential. They’re lovely, but standard coaches are just as scenic and often quieter.
